Mark Oestreicher -The relationship between suffering & hope

Recently, I took a small group of youth ministry bloggers to Haiti, as a sort of “advance team” to scope out the wisdom of taking groups to Haiti in the coming months.  The experience was like none I’ve had in other developing countries, as there is such a clear movement of God — a revival, really — sweeping through Haiti right now.  I was particularly struck by the connection between suffering and hope, and realized that so many Haitians, in the midst of their deep and real suffering, are experiencing a level of hope that I have not tasted.  It gave me a deep appreciation for Paul’s words in Romans 5:  …we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  I had a chance to talk about this suffering/hope connection as part of the sermon at my own church this past weekend.   Here is a link to the mp3 of the sermon, my part is the first 20 minutes.
